A Heartbreaking Loss on the Farm

Writer: Amanda GoodwinAmanda Goodwin

This morning, I woke up to an absolute nightmare—something no farmer ever wants to face. My beloved buck, Asher, had passed away.

He was fine last night, showing no signs of illness or distress. This morning, I found him lying in his shelter on his side, gone. No symptoms. No explanation. Just heartbreak.

Asher was more than just a buck to me. He was the gentle, easygoing soul who played a pivotal role in improving my herd. He was the foundation of so much of what I’ve built here and losing him feels like a huge piece of the farm is missing.

Adding to the ache of this loss, I realized today would have been his fourth birthday. It’s such a painful reminder of how fleeting life can be, even for our most cherished animals.

Asher left behind some amazing offspring, and through them, his legacy will live on in my herd. Every time I see their strength, grace, or gentle nature, I’ll be reminded of the incredible impact he had on our farm.

Rest in peace, sweet Asher. You’ll always be in my heart and in the herd you helped shape.
